Independent Review ACCU's: Summary

The Independent Review of Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCU's) was recently released calling for changes to clarify governance, improve transparency, facilitate positive project outcomes and co-benefits, and enhance confidence in the integrity and effectiveness of the scheme.

One highlight from the review is that no new 'avoided deforestation' projects will be allowed to qualify and a focus will instead be placed on alternate incentives for maintaining and improving native vegetation.

Some recommendations around revegetation and project integrity will require all existing ACCU projects to be reviewed to ensure they meet these recommendations.

16 different recommendations were made in total – all of which can be found here: https://www.dcceew.gov.au/sites/default/files/documents/independent-review-accu-exec-summary.pdf

The Federal Government has (in principle) accepted all recommendations.
